An old boss told me you tend to accomplish what you want in a job in 3 to 5 years. Then it becomes routine.

If that is the case, then around year two you should be looking at where you are headed next.

I was always looking at where I could progress. I basically did it on my own. My HR people were never a help and I quickly learned that there was no real progression plan. They always left it up to me.

Some people are fine with a routine. They like the comfort of knowing what to expect and don't want problems or challenges. If that is what you want so be it. But you have then accepted that situation, live with it.

But is you want to progress, you need to shake things up and take new challenges. Just because you sit in the same job for 20 years doesn't mean your pay will sky rocket. A job is worth what it is worth. You want more, move on.

Or, be that cute little hamster running on the wheel and getting to the same place and the end of each ride.
