I always made it a practice to touch base with both my direct reports and those I worked regularly with. I caught up on things happening and just checked in to see how they were doing. They knew I was engaged and cared about them and what and how they were doing. It also alerted me to any potential situations so I could deal with them as quickly as possible. Rarely had a surprise come my way.
