In my Project Management class I emphasize using the tools taught and demonstrating that they are used properly. The entire grade is based on this. No exams or quizzes that test memory, but not application. Too many "smart" people can spout what something is, but not how to properly use or apply it.
And just because one isn't good at say math, doesn't mean they aren't smart. Our abilities differ and what you may not be particularly good at, doesn't mean you are bad at everything. Find your strengths and use them. That is truly being smart.
