I've seen that too. Not to the extreme described here, but with people who are never happy. Had a partner, about 15 years my junior. Told me the only difference between us was my years of experience. Otherwise we were just the same so he didn't know why I made more than him.. I told him he was insulting and that while I had more experience I also had accomplished much more. He never went through some of the things I did.

People can be selfish and self centered. Just don't let it get to you. Don't indulge them or empathize with them. Listen and move on. If it is too much cut them out. Let them wallow in their own self pity. Enjoy and appreciate who you are and what you have. You will be the bigger and happier person.
