This is not just true in Marketing, but in many other areas. Too many "majors" that lead to nothing. You interested in a certain thing? Take some elective courses in it. Don't need a college degree to be a mechanic, plumber or such. Go to trade school.

My brother-in-law got a PHD in 16th English History. No jobs there. So he worked for the government for a while. Apparently they need that badly to help run the country.

After a few years of being bored out of his mind, he went back to school, got a law degree and became a successful lawyer. But he wasted how much time and money on a history degree?

He was a lucky one because he moved on. How many won't and can't and so they have a worthless degree, mounds of debt and are mad that the government won't fix their mistake? Sad answer, Many.
